The Lowdown on Ovulation

Did you know that even if you aren't trying to conceive, it is still important to ovulate? Ovulation is the main event of the menstrual cycle and has so many other benefits than simply conception. This is due to the production of the hormone progesterone that occurs when we ovulate.

Other benefits of ovulation include:
〰️ regulates immune function
〰️ supports bone health
〰️ reduces the risk of stroke
〰️ supports healthy breast tissue
〰️ supports cardiovascular health
〰️ supports thyroid function
〰️ anti-inflammatory

Contrary to popular belief, period tracking apps cannot predict ovulation so it is important to understand the signs of ovulation whether you are trying to conceive, prevent a pregnancy or just for overall health! Ovulating on day 14 is an estimated average based on the 28-day cycle, which many women don't have. There are many factors that contribute to if and when we ovulate, that may influence the timing of ovulation.

Signs of ovulation include:
〰️ changes in cervical mucous to a clear, thin consistency - similar to an egg-white
〰️ a spike in basal body temperature. We are looking for three mid-cycle temperatures that are higher than the previous 6 alongside mucus changes
〰️ increase in libido
〰️ slight tingly/cramping sensation in ovaries
