Psoriasis Awareness Month

Psoriasis is an autoimmune condition characterised by an increased rate of skin cell regeneration, resulting in inflammation. Psoriasis is therefore an inflammatory condition, and can manifest as thick, scaly and dry skin commonly found on the knees, elbows and scalp.

It is important to understand the underlying cause of psoriasis in order to treat effectively. Factors implicated in aggravating psoriasis include:

〰️ infections: bacterial (strep, staph), fungi (candida), viruses

〰️ medication

〰️ smoking

〰️ stress and mood disorders

〰️ gut dysbiosis

〰️ diet

〰️ genetic predisposition

Treatment strategies for psoriasis include:

〰️ anti-inflammatory diet: remove/reduce gluten, dairy, sugar, caffeine and alcohol. Gluten sensitivity is common in individuals with psoriasis, and can cause a systemic inflammatory response

〰️ antioxidant rich foods: oxidative stress and increased free radical generation have been linked to skin inflammation and psoriasis. Antioxidant rich foods include brightly coloured fruit and vegetables such as berries, turmeric, capsicum etc

〰️ liver support: increase intake of cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli, cauliflower, kale & cabbage to support liver function

〰️ support the gut microbiome: through pre & probiotic rich foods, and specific strains of probiotics

〰️ stress management

〰️ nutritional & herbal supplementation to reduce inflammation, modulate the immune system and promote tissue repair
