Hay Fever Season
With the arrival of Spring comes an increase in pesky hay fever and seasonal allergies.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
An interaction between an inhaled allergen and our mast cells and basophils results in the release of histamine, causing common symptoms of hay fever such as watery itchy eyes, runny nose and sneezing.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
What can we do to minimise hay fever and allergies?
Bioflavonoids such as quercetin are effective for hay fever relief as they work by inhibiting the release of histamine from mast cells. Quercetin is found in capers, onions, berries, grapes, apples & broccoli.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Increasing an enzyme called DAO may also be beneficial as DAO helps to break down histamine, therefore decreasing its effects on the body. Adequate amounts of Vitamin C, B6 and copper are required for DAO production, but a healthy gut lining is also important as this is where DAO is produced and released.
