How Healthy Are Your Bowel Movements?
Regular bowel movements are a crucial part of digestion, and overall health. The longer the stools sit in the colon, the more time bacteria has to ferment, resulting in increased bloating and often gas.
Irregular bowel movements also result in recirculation of waste in the body, including hormones, which can wreak havoc on the skin.
We ideally want to be passing a bowel movement at minimum once daily. To support healthy, regular bowel motions:
〰️ Ensure adequate fibre intake - think flaxseeds, chia seeds, green leafy vegetables & 2 kiwi fruit daily (skin on)!
〰️ Hydrate! Fluids are important to help keep the stools soft and easy to pass. Aim for 33ml of water per kg of body weight. An additional 500ml is needed for every hour of exercise, and 250ml for every coffee consumed
〰️ Daily movement helps food to move through the colon more quickly, resulting in a bowel movement
〰️ Under the guidance of a practitioner, utilise herbal medicine to support gut health and encourage regularity
