Post-Pill Acne
Post-pill acne is a very common presentation in clinic. The oral contraceptive pill (OCP) is something most women have either taken or been prescribed in their lifetime. While this is the right choice for many, providing freedom over their bodies and fertility, going on the OCP should be an educated and informed decision, with possible side effects explained.
A few things about the pill..
The pill does not regulate your cycle, nor does it balance hormones or fix hormonal conditions such as acne or PCOS. It contains synthetic hormones that suppress ovulation and shut off communication between the brain and the reproductive system.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Side effects of the OCP may include bloating, irregular bowel motions and digestive discomfort as the pill disrupts the gut microbiome.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The OCP also depletes the body of several nutrients, including B vitamins, zinc, selenium, vitamin D, folate, vitamin C & magnesium. If you are taking the OCP, it is important to support the body to replenish these essential nutrients.
Naturopathy can play a role in supporting the body through the transition off the pill, and minimising any symptoms that arise as a result of this.
Supporting Your Skin Post Pill
〰️ support gut health - the pill can disrupt the balance of bacteria in the gut, leading to an imbalanced microbiome, inflammation and impacting our ability to absorb nutrients needed for healthy skin. Eating a diverse intake of plant foods, and incorporating fermented foods can support the balance of gut bacteria
〰️ support the liver - the liver is responsible for detoxifying synthetic hormones from the pill. When these hormones are not excreted adequately, the liver becomes overburdened which can contribute to acne. Consuming cruciferous vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, Brussel sprouts) will assist the liver in excreting excess hormones
〰️ manage blood sugar levels - ensuring you consume regular, balanced meals supports blood sugar stabilisation. Fluctuating blood sugar levels can exacerbate acne
〰️ correct nutritional deficiencies - the pill depletes the body of several nutrients, many of which are important for skin health. Correcting any nutritional deficiencies, through both diet and possible supplementation will help to support healthy skin and reduce the risk of post pill acne due to their influence on insulin
